Lanesboro School Board authorizes 2008 multi-cultural trip

LANESBORO - At their first meeting in 2008, the Lanesboro School Board authorized teacher Chris Knutson to go ahead with organizing a December 2008 school trip to the border area of Texas. Billed as a Multi-cultural Experience, with exposure to Spanish, Knutson said that 63 students had expressed preliminary interest in participating in the trip. It is estimated that it will cost $1,000 per student and it is hoped that fundraising would take care of fifty percent of each student's costs.
Counseling Grant
Principle Brett Clarke briefed the board on a grant administered by the state Office of Higher Education aimed at encouraging students to get "in and through" college. The grant would provide resources that would be targeted at ninth and tenth graders, with a focus on aiding them on making curriculum choices that aim toward college attendance and completion.
Clarke said that the school is doing similar things already through Life Skills classes and that the grant, if approved, would supplement this.
Board member David Ruen said that the program would help move our students along a curricular path.
"It is almost as if we would be doing a development plan on each student, with the aim of them acquiring skills," Ruen said.
The board authorized Clarke to apply for the grant before the February 5 deadline.
Supplemental Curriculum
Clarke also updated the board on the latest efforts by the district to provide supplemental learning programs to aid students.
The school has acquired Math software that will allow students to work individually to help them understand math concepts, ranging from general math to calculus.
Clarke said the unique feature of the software is that it allows the student to approach problem solving in more than one way - if the student isn't able to master the concept on their first attempt, the program will then try teaching from a different perspective.
Superintendent Jeff Boggs said that they are exploring ways to implement this new feature into the teaching program.
Other Business
• The board passed a resolution authorizing the administration to work on their behalf to make reductions in programs and positions as is necessary. This is an annual requirement of the state.
• The board elected officers for 2008: John Rein, chairperson; David Ruen, vice-chairperson; Linda Sifford, clerk; and Eric Miehlisch, treasurer.
• The board approved maternity leave for Jennifer Rogers, beginning around February 22, 2008.
