The Lanesboro school board, at their regular meeting on February 21, 2008, agreed to send a donation of $1,000 to the memorial fund that has been established on behalf of the children killed in the tragic school bus accident near Cottonwood on Tuesday. A letter of condolence will be sent to the Lakeview School Bus personnel from the Transportation Director of Lanesboro schools. The Lakeview school is similar in size to Lanesboro's, serving about 585 students. It was agreed, the loss is monumental to such a community.
Energy Services Group
A motion carried to contract the services of an engineering firm called Energy Services Group (ESG) to make evaluations and recommendations regarding facility management. Three board members have met with the company's representative. The group will spend about six months doing air quality and energy efficiency readings, then make suggestions to the district about long-term improvements. ESG guarantees that any changes recommended will result in cost savings equal to any capital outlay. They will also assure that state requirements are met for air quality in the school facilities.
ESG is located in Wayzata and serves multiple areas in Minnesota.
Student Behavior
There was discussion, with no specific actions or motions taken, regarding the need for a policy regarding unacceptable student behavior, especially involving alcohol. It was suggested that off duty police be hired to support chaperones at school events and that violation of rules regarding use of alcohol would be addressed firmly and parents informed and called to participate in dealing with behavioral issues. The goal would be to increase health and safety of students and to assist parents willing to supervise school dances, trips and events.
Other Business
The board agreed to a pay increase for Transportation Director, Erik Overland, as well increases in route pay for van drivers.
The school calendar for the 2008-2009 school year was approved, with teacher workshop days being changed to the end of quarters one, two and three instead of having one at the end of the school year.
The teacher seniority list was approved.
