Fillmore Central School Board to require annual review of administrators

The Fillmore Central School Board had some discussion at their regular meeting last Thursday, February 21 about the need to conduct annual reviews of the administration and the superintendent. The board members agreed that having an annual review procedure in place would be very beneficial, and would provide staff with constructive feedback on how they are performing in their jobs.
Currently teaching staff have filled out surveys on the two principals, and Superintendent Myrna Luehmann will hold a review with them in the future. The concern of the board was who would be giving Luehmann a review.
Chairperson Sue Sikkink agreed to be part of the review process but suggested that another board member also be involved. The two board members, Sikkink and Vice-Chair Deb Ristau, will compile surveys done by other board members and do the actual evaluation with Luehmann.
The board also approved having an annual evaluation for administrative heads, such as the principals, the head custodian, community education director and others. These evaluations would be done by Luehmann. Board member Sue Ostrom recommended having the annual reviews completed in January of each year.
Brenda Lentz, K-8 Principal, stated that, as an administrator, she feels that it would be difficult to set goals when an evaluation is in the middle of the year. She believed the end of the school year would be a better time to set goals for the following year. There would be regular check ups throughout the year to see how things are progressing.
The board felt that there needed to be a starting place for the evaluations, and approved having them in the middle of the school year.
Budget Committee
During the January meeting, the school board agreed to form an ad-hoc committee to proceed with the approximately $200,000 in budget cuts. Board member Ron Stevens mentioned that he felt that everyone on the board should be involved in deciding what the cuts will be, instead of a committee. The board approved the dissolution of the committee. There will be a special meeting for the board to discuss possible budget cuts on March 11 at 8:05 p.m. at the Middle School library in Preston.
Other business
• Brenda Lentz was removed from the certified staff seniority list, as she is not a licensed MN teacher. She will still have seniority in her principal position.
• An open enrollment request was approved for a family moving out of the district.
• On March 17 Fillmore Central will be hosting the large group music contest. All students will be dismissed at 2:30.
• Both the Preston Arts Council and the Harmony Arts Council donated $100 toward the Artist in Residency Program that takes place in May.
