Dr. Curtis Mathison from Spring Valley High School Class of 1948 is presenting two identical piano-organ concerts in Fillmore County. The first concert will be at St. Columban Catholic Church in Preston on Saturday, August 13 at 2 p.m. The second concert will be at Greenleafton Reformed Church on Sunday, August 14 at 7 p.m. The organ portion will contain two flashy numbers by J.S. Bach and Franck's "Fantasie in A Major." Winners for many in the audience will be showy arrangements of six spirituals and hymns performed on the piano. Also on the piano Dr. Mathison will present Gershwin's famous "Rhapsody in Blue" in its entirety. Other interesting compositions will be Chopin's "Ballade in g minor" and Moussorgsky's "Great Gate of Keiv."
Dr. Mathison became pianist of Cherry Grove Evangelical Church (now United Methodist) at age 15. He studied piano with Arlone Kruegel and Valborg Gullickson in the Spring Valley area. He gave piano lessons to children and youth in the Cherry Grove and Greenleafton communities in the summers from 1947-53. His Bachelor of Music in piano performance (cum laude) is from North Central College, Naperville, Illinois. His Master of Music in piano performance is from Indiana University. He studied organ for 15 semesters. He became certified to teach through Wayne State University, Detroit, and received his doctorate in music education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is currently organist of First United Methodist Church, Wayne, MI and is a private piano teacher.
Dr. Mathison will be delighted to see friends, relatives and strangers at either of these concerts. An offering will be taken at each concert; there are no tickets.
