Kingsland School Board deals with budget cuts

WYKOFF - "These are times that we as a Board do not like to do what we have to do"
Board Chairman Mitch Lenz addressed the audience of perhaps a dozen people in the media center of the Kingsland Middle School in Wykoff at the April 21st meeting. He was referring to cuts that would have to be made to balance the budget through year 2010 through 2011.
Darin Strosahl explained to the board that in February Administration was told to prepare recommendations on how to reduce staff to make budget. The recommendations were based on a declining enrollment that is anticipated through 2010 and 2011.
In 2006-2007 there were 917 students enrolled. That dropped to 835 the next year, which will result in a budget deficit of $200,000.00. The next year 09-10 it declined to 780 students and a $280,000 shortfall. In year ten and eleven there is anticipated to be 750 students resulting in a shortage of $150,000.00.
As a result this will mean reductions in custodial positions, Physical Education and Art. Food Service will be cut as well as transportation. Scott Hanson will be placed on unrequested leave of absence along with Kathleen Bernard. A resolution was passed to discontinue the head custodial positions as of May 30, 2008. Charley Frank was hired as the new Director of Maintenance Operations and Grounds. Gary Zwart and Jerry Nash will be recalled to custodian positions.
Paul Eckheart is a half time custodian at the elementary school. His position will be reduced as of May 30, 2008. Once again the community steps forward and makes contributions for school programs.

• Volunteers who help move the kitchen on Saturday.
• Volunteers who painted Bruce & Deanne Spurgeon.
• Gary Erickson - Volunteered 2-3 weeks to tutoring for Middle school MCA test.
Saving Money with Rebates
Kathy Beevers, Business Manager for the District, reported to the Board that she has been working with Spring Valley Utilities in obtaining rebates on the new and improved utilities in the new building. She indicated there may be rebates for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning and in the new kitchen as a result of the new construction.
Resignations
The Board also accepted 6 resignations. Wally Beevers resigned as Head Football Coach. C.J. Boerger resigned as Head Boys Basketball Coach and Wayne Hebrink resigned as Head Girls Basketball coach. Angie Worley resigned as Head Volleyball Coach. Another resignation was that of Ashley Huntley as Elementary Paraprofessional and Liz Padjen as Community Education Coordinator.
Charlie Frank was named Director of Facility Maintenance and Steve Erickson as Ag Long Term Substitute. Cheryl Boyd was granted an Extended Leave of Absence.
