The Lanesboro School Board, at their Tuesday, May 13 meeting, discussed the need for resurfacing the back parking lot. It was last surfaced in 1990 and is breaking up and has some drainage problems. One bid has been submitted for the work at an estimated cost of $32,000. More bids will be sought and with petroleum based products being so costly, doing the parking lot in cement will be considered. It is hoped that the project can be completed by August 1.

Teachers contracts were approved by the board and two resignations were accepted. Those resigning are Joel Bryan, the band instructor who has taken a position in Cannon Falls and Chao Carlson, a paraprofessional, who has also accepted a new position elsewhere.

Elementary Principal James Semmen reported that an additional kindergarten teacher will be needed to accommodate the 32 full day kindergartners that will be attending in the fall. There were 25 full-day kindergartners and 27 first graders this past year, so this represents considerable growth in the upcoming year. The class will be divided into two groups of 16 students each.

Brett Clarke, the secondary principal, brought details regarding the Minnesota School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program. The school district applied for and received a grant to implement this program and leadership training will be provided to designated staff. The program is designed as a systems approach to successfully educate all students and especially those with challenging behavior. The program has been implemented across the country with successful results, according to the information offered to the board. The grant requires a two year commitment to the program. Detailed information is available on line at PBIS.ORG.

Congratulations are in order for the 29 seniors that will graduate from Lanesboro High School on June 1 at 1:30 p.m. Their baccalaureate dinner will be held on May 28 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

The next meeting will be held on June 19, 2008.
