On New Years we honor the old and welcome the new. So it was with the Lanesboro School Board at their June, 19, 2008 meeting as they looked toward the upcoming school year.

The board was proud to recognize the success of the boys track team who took second in state competition and two outstanding golfers, Robin Sautter, a 2008 grad and Brett Hungerholt who will be a junior this fall. Congratulations to these fine young athletes.

Resignations were accepted by the board, from JB Mathison, elementary instructor and coach, Joel Bryan as band instructor and from Justin Rein who has taught Secondary Special Ed as well as coaching basketball and track. Superintendent Jeff Boggs shared remarks from Mr. Rein's letter of resignation and praised him for having done an exceptional job for Lanesboro schools. Mr Ryan is taking a position in Rochester.

Contracts have been offered for 2008-2009 to Robin Scheu, to teach choir, and to Brett Klaehn for the third grade position. One year contracts were offered to Krissy Overland and Jessica Johnson for elementary positions. These one year positions were needed to cover the census bubbles in kindergarten and the 6th grade. Jeff Boggs said the large pool of well qualified applicants made the decisions very challenging.

Contracts for the non certified staff, bus drivers, custodians and day care positions, were approved. The para-professional contracts have yet to be approved, pending clarification of student numbers and classroom needs.

Workers comp insurance bids have been considered and the contract will go to SFM Insurance company at a savings of about $10,000 over the competing providers. The board agreed to accept.

Bids are still being sought for the parking lot refinishing project. Most recent bids place the cost at approximately $28,000.

So, while the parks and playgrounds, back yards and grassy fields of Lanesboro are full of kids playing on a perfect summer evening, none thinking of anything relative to school, the board gathered diligently to consider their needs for the upcoming year.

The board will meet again on July 17 at 7:00 p.m.
