Fillmore Central School Board: Parents can now go online to monitor child's progress

Parents can now go online to the Fillmore Central website to check their child's academic progress at school, Principal Heath Olstad told the school board at their November 26 meeting. Parents, with use of their password, can only access their own child's information. Olstad called the web site program a "good tool" for parents. It was noted that at the November 8 and 12 parent-teacher conferences, the online program received positive feedback from parents.
Middle School Dean of Students Chris Mensink updated the board on fundraising, stating that $15,900 has been raised for the Middle School. He also reported schedule changes after the lunch hour, where at 1:10 p.m. students may choose to go to computer lab, library, an assigned structured study hall or lunch detention. The time could also be used for religious release, student council, knowledge bowl and team meetings. All students will eat lunch at the same time.
Milk Break Prices
Superintendent Myrna Luehmann advised the board that the current $25 per semester for milk breaks is not enough to cover the actual costs, given the rise in milk prices. The morning milk cost has increased from thirteen cents to twenty-one cents. The board approved an increase of $5 to $30 per semester.
Board member John Torgrimson asked about the impact on kids qualifying for free lunches, as the federal program does not cover morning milk breaks. Luehmann noted that there have been donors who have provided funds to help children who cannot afford the milk.
Junior High Coach
The board gave final approval to the hiring of Kerry Kingsley by Athletic Director Jane Montgomery as the girls junior high basketball coach.
Lighting Project
Morem Electric, Harmony, was awarded the low bid of $49,950.00 to replace and improve lighting in the schools. The work will be done mostly over the Christmas holidays in both the middle and high school and funded through health and safety money. The improvements will be more energy efficient, safer, and provide better lighting.
Other Business
• The board approved a vision and mission statement declaring their desire to create a learning environment for all students and to "inspire each student to reach personal high standards through academics, arts, athletics, and leadership challenges."
• Board members voted by ballot to fill four openings on the Service Cooperative Board. Board member Sue Ostrom is one of the candidates.
• Truth In Taxation meetings will be December 3 at 6:00 p.m. and on December 10 if a second meeting is needed in the high school media center.
• Kenny Heibel was awarded a plaque for his many years of service to the school district in the bus program.
• The next board meeting will be held December 17 at 5 p.m. at the high school in Harmony.
