FC Knowledge Bowl teams known for "kicking brain"

Not every team at Fillmore Central has to deal with wild fans and sweaty gym bags; the Fillmore Central Knowledge Bowl teams don't need much to succeed in "kicking brain".

Knowledge Bowl is a trivia competition where three teams of five complete a written test and are asked a series of oral questions on topics ranging from classic literature to trigonometry to hit reality shows. A buzzer system is used to see which team gets the first chance to answer.

The middle school teams have started practice already, but the high schoolers don't begin until December. When in season, both sets of Knowledge Bowl-ers meet every Friday morning to practice. "The practices are so much fun," says middle school coach Melissa Onsager. "We celebrate every right answer and everyone is very supportive of each other."

That doesn't mean the teams show no mercy at competitions. For the junior high teams (7th-9th grade), there are three round-robin tournaments held in Rochester throughout the fall. Competitions work similarly for the high school brainiacs, but they also have conference meets with area schools to determine the Conference Champion. (A title Fillmore Central won in 2007!)

At the end of the "regular season", the section meets begin for teams hoping to advance to the state competition.

You may not be able to cheer on your Knowledge Bowl teams with pom-poms and spirited chants, but delve into some of their wisdom with some questions from the middle school quiz. Would you make FC's geek squad?
