Rabies is a virus that is passed between animals via saliva; it is usually spread though bite wounds. Rabies can infect any mammal, including humans; however, the primary source of rabies infection in Fillmore County is skunks. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for rabies infection and the disease is 100% fatal. People who have been exposed to the rabies virus should receive a series of post exposure rabies vaccinations in order to prevent rabies from occurring. These injections are costly and painful.

There are some steps you can take to help minimize rabies exposure to you and your family. First, make sure that all of your pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. Call your veterinary clinic today to see if your pet's vaccinations are up to date. Secondly, avoid handling any stray or wild animal even if they appear to be healthy. If you are bitten by any animal, regardless of their rabies vaccination status, you should contact your health care provider immediately.
