PRESTON - Rhonda Rhane Wangen, 49, of Canton, was charged in Fillmore County District Court on Monday, December 8, 2009, with one count of felony theft and two counts of credit card fraud.

According to the criminal complaint, it is alleged that Rhonda Wangen opened a credit card account in her son, Brandon Wangen's name with Chase Bank then used the account to make purchases for herself while he was deployed overseas as a Marine. At the time Rhonda Wangen opened the credit card account she had power of attorney on her son's checking account, so she could pay expenses for Brandon's child. She applied for the credit card on-line so a signature was not required.

Nearly $7000 in unauthorized purchases, late fees and finance charges were made from November 2006 through September 2008.

Judge Robert Benson released Rhonda Wangen on her own recognizance pending her next schedule court appearance on December 15, 2008.

• Chad David Cornelison, 25, of Decorah, was charged in District Court with assault following an incident in Mabel.

According to court records, it is alleged that on August 4, 2008 Cornelison struck another man several times with a lead pipe following a dispute in Mabel.

Judge Benson released Cornelison on his own recognizance pending his next court appearance on December 15, 2008.
