The cast and crew of Fillmore Central’s One-Act play were hard at work over Christmas break. Shown here are junior Nate Hanson, senior Trent O’Connor, and senior Sami Skaalen as they rehearse a scene from “A Jury of Her Peers”, a 35-minute murder mystery.

Suspicious activity on a small town farm. An abusive husband strangled in his sleep. A scheming "jury" of women trying to disguise a crime. These are only a few of the eerie elements appearing in "A Jury of Her Peers", Fillmore Central High School's one-act play for 2009.

Written by Burton Bumgarner, and adapted from a short story by Susan Glaspell, "A Jury of Her Peers" is a murder mystery set in 1917 about a farmer's wife accused of killing her husband. It grows into a story about the struggle between personal morals and social standards after a few neighbor ladies try to gain information about the crime and discover the motive.

"It has taken a little time to make the change to a more serious play, coming from two comedies last year," coach Jackie Whitacre said. The cast is made up of mostly veteran actors with a few newcomers in the crew. Whitacre also mentioned that a big concern right now is the set because once its complete, the team will be traveling on a bus with an elaborate country-home setting.

The One-Act competition is similar to that of a varsity sport where teams perform their 35-minute play in front of theater judges from the area. There is a conference meet scheduled for Saturday, January 17, where FC hopes to gain the Conference Champ title for the second year in a row. After that, the race to state finals begins.

One-act competitions are open to the public, but if you would like a sneak preview of the play, there will be a public performance in the Fillmore Central High School stage gym after the girl's basketball game on January 13. And feel free to bring the Black Hole.
