Benson named Chief Judge of the Third Judicial District

Judge Robert Benson

Judge Robert R. Benson was elected as the new Chief Judge of the Third Judicial District on January 30, 2009, at a meeting of the 23 judges of the District. The Third Judicial District consists of the 11 southeastern Minnesota counties. Judge Benson will take office on July 1, 2009 replacing current Chief Judge William A. Johnson. The Chief Judge has general administrative authority over the courts within the Judicial District in addition to his trial court judge duties and responsibilities. Judge Benson will remain chambered in Fillmore County during his term as Chief Judge.

Judge Benson was also recently honored by receiving the 2008 "Judge of the Year" Award for Exemplary Service from the Minnesota District Judges Association. This award is given to one Minnesota trial judge each year to recognize the efforts of a judge who has provided outstanding service to the Judicial System. Nominations for this award are made by judges, court staff, lawyers and the public. The judge must have distinguished them self by:

1. Contributing to the improvement of the judicial system;

2. Exemplary service as a trial court judge; and

3. Promoting judicial efficiency.

Judge Benson was appointed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleen Blatz to serve as the Chair of the Statewide Judicial Strategic Planning committee for 2008-2009 and reappointed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Russell Anderson for 2010-2011. This committee determined the strategic plan for the entire state judicial system. In addition, Judge Benson has been involved in many local, district and state level committees, a member of the Dodge/Fillmore/Olmsted Community Corrections Advisory Board, co-chair of the 3rd/5th Judicial District Early Case Management Pilot Project, member of the Statewide Access and Fairness Survey Workgroup, member of the Statewide Judicial Education Committee, member of the District Executive Committee and District Resources Workgroup.
