By a show of hands, who actually likes receiving junk mail and e-mail spam?

Okay, that was supposed to be a rhetorical question. No hands were supposed to go up. I guess there is a fetish for everything, including indignant and fraudulant marketing.

For those of you who appreciate a little junk in the trunk -- making reference to tidbits that might qualify under the category of useless information -- we have created a special section on our website simply coined "Junk Mail." This new feature is a collection of e-mails I receive on a daily - maybe even hourly basis.

In the media industry, we tend to get targeted by every lobbying group under the sun. Seriously, you'll have to check out "Junk Mail" to see what I'm talking about.

You'll find headlines like "New Study Shows Beer Industry Contributes $2,533,487,861 Annually to Minnesota Economy." So, drink up! You're boosting the economy. And, "Is Legalization the Best Way to Address Mexican Drug Trafficking Violence?" There's a wide variety of subjects for all of you news junkies to address national, international, galactical and possibly universal challenges.

I promise we won't post the completely insulting e-mails that we receive every once in while.

The other day, I received a nice helping of spam (not in a can) from a sender named "Daily Challenge" and the subject line said "Someone thinks you are dumb."

"Oh, yeah!" I said to my computer screen. "Well, you have a square head!"

Well, to be honest, I didn't really say anything, but I wanted to. The one thing I learned in school a long time ago is that you never get anywhere in life responding to anonymity -- because you don't know who they are. It was a pretty short lesson in our curriculum.

But, I'd really like to have a thoughtful conversation with whomever is organizing this marketing campaign of insulting the e-mail recipient. Are they targeting people with road rage who can't contain themselves even in front of a computer?

If you are feeling over-confident, just let me know and I can forward this e-mail to you.

Since I tend to lack sensitivity to anonymous, aggressive and unwanted e-mail senders, I'd definitely entertain your thoughts on naming this new section we've added to our website. If I'm being too harsh with the name "Junk Mail," please let me know. You can send me an e-mail at editor@fillmorecountyjournal.com, and I promise I won't post your e-mail under the "Junk Mail" section of our website -- unless it is warranted (my disclaimer!).

One person's junk is another person's junk, right?
