The Lanesboro School Board at their Thursday, April 16 meeting, approved a measure that would allow teaching staff to attend special training provided by the Hiawatha Valley Education District in August. Staff will be able to trade one workshop day for one training day as an incentive to attend. The district would then pay staff a stipend to attend any remaining training days.
Superintendent Jeff Boggs said that about 10 staff attended the training last year and he thought it would be good to offer the opportunity again. Boggs said that staff usually attend one or two days of training offered during the five day program, whatever suited their teaching needs.
Chairman Dave Ruen said he supported the practice, but wondered if it might be considered a benefit that might come up during teacher negotiations.
School board member Dave Lawstuen said that if the training opportunity was approved annually by the board, he thought it would not be considered a part of negotiations.
Principal Brett Clarke updated the board on the Career Guidance Plan. He said that a letter would be sent out to parents of 9th through 12th grade students to update them on timelines their children face in planning for post high school opportunities.
Clarke said that this way parents will be informed about what students are exposed to at various grade levels regarding academic planning.
He said that this will help parents plan with their children how best to choose classes that suit their career plans.
The board approved hiring Pam Ristau, CPA to conduct the districts 2008-09 audit at a bid of $6000.
The board accepted the property and liability insurance bid of $20,057 from EMC as represented by Vaaler Insurance Agency.
The board passed a resolution of congratulations to members of the high school choir and band for their success at the large group contest in Caledonia on March 23. The choir received a superior rating and the band received an excellent rating.
The May board meeting on May 21 will be at 6:00 p.m.
