City Administrator Joe Hoffman informed the Preston City Council at their April 20 meeting that the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) had eliminated funding for three historic sites in the state including the Forestville Meighen site. State Senator Sharon Ropes had sent out the e-mail noting the MHS decision.
This decision will only affect the historic site and not other activities at Forestville State Park itself. The funding was cut as part of the MHS's efforts to make budget cuts. Hoffman remarked, "This is unfortunate news."
Mayor Kurt Reicks said the historic site was an asset to the area. Council members unanimously passed a resolution in support of restoring funding to the Forestville Meighen site.
Other Business In Brief
The Serviceman's Club wants to hang an additional 30 flags this year. They have requested that the city share half of the cost of new flag brackets, $225. It was decided by consensus to see if the Utilities Commission, which is responsible for the poles the brackets will be mounted on, would assume the cost. Councilman David Harrison requested that it also be determined if they would need to purchase more flags to hang in the additional brackets.
Public Works Director Bill Cox explained that the pickup shared with Utilities and used by the city for street work and snow removal is in need of replacement because of numerous breakdowns. The council authorized the purchase of a Chevy 2500HD off the state bid with snow plow and tool box attachments for a total cost to the city of $13,174.72 which is half of the total cost of the pickup. Utilities will pay the other half. The Utility Commission already approved the expenditure for their half of the cost. Hoffman noted that the cost to the city for the pickup was both budgeted and anticipated.
Michele Gatzke from Good Samaritan Homecare submitted a request for a physically disabled parking spot near the intersection with St. Paul and Main Street for their clients that receive outpatient therapy. Councilman Robert Sauer recommended that it be on St. Paul which is a smoother surface for wheel chairs. Main Street is partially brick surfaced.
Hoffman said that property owners Andy and Anita Biesek had no objections and that the request was reasonable. Sauer suggested that the disabled parking spot that previously was on St. Paul be reestablished. The council approved a resolution requesting that the Fillmore County Board establish a physically disabled parking zone on the west side of the street on the east side of the building on St. Paul Street.
Sandy Benson updated the council on plans for this year's Farmers Market. This will be the second year and she said that last year was successful determined by responses from both vendors and customers. The market will be once a week starting May 1, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
County Assessor Cynthia Blagsvedt gave an overview of property values and assessments for the Board of Appeal and Equalization Hearing. No one from the public was present and there were no comments. The total assessed value for all property in Preston was up 1.25% from 2008 to 2009.
