Graduating seniors fair well in Fillmore County

In Fillmore County, the communities have always been very supportive of their schools and the students who graduate from them. Businesses, organizations, and individuals pull together to help these kids be successful in life by giving them some money for college.

Every year the seniors apply for the local scholarships that they qualify for, and committees choose the winners. Sometimes a scholarship is for a student going into a certain field, such as nursing. Sometimes there are academic requirements. Often, family members of a person who has died will have a scholarship fund in memory of that person.

For the Preston Servicemen's Club, the only requirements are to be a student at Fillmore Central, and a close family member must have served in the military. Each student receives $500 after they complete a semester of college and have enrolled in a second semester.

LaVerne Paulson is the head of the scholarship committee for the Servicemen's Club. He said there are many ways that the committee raises money for these scholarships, which they have been giving out since 1998. Money is raised by private donations, memorials from funerals, and a raffle.

"We have been more than blessed with contributions by businesses in the area," said Paulson.

According to Paulson, the Servicemen's Club has been able to give out more than 20 scholarships each year for the past few years, thanks to the help of the community.

"It's a very beneficial thing," said Paulson. "There are lots of kids getting a little help to go to school."
