On Monday, September 21, six area nursing care centers gathered at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, for the annual Southeast MN Regional Spelling Bee. Those attending and competing in the spell down included: our hosts and last year's winning team, Green Lea Manor; Caledonia Care and Rehab, Caledonia; Good Shepherd Lutheran Services, Rushford; Tweeten Health Services, Spring Grove; Valley view Nursing Home, Houston; and Harmony Community Healthcare, Harmony.
There are a few guidelines to follow in participating in this "Bee." One month prior to the competition, each care center receives a list of words to study. This year's words were taken from the "1990 Words of Champions," list, including the three categories of words: normal, difficult, and most difficult, and the latter, according to the competitors, can be very challenging.
Each team consists of three spellers, and the hosting team selects an announcer. This year's announcer was Betty Nichols, a former teacher from Spring Grove, who pronounced thirteen rounds of words, while using them in a sentence. At the end of the rounds, a tally was taken and the winning team was presented with a traveling plaque which has made its way around to all of the facilities.
This year's winning team, Harmony Community Healthcare, was represented by Bertha Smedsrud, Catherine Bakke, and Gilma Scheevel. Smedsrud, who said she was always a strong speller in school, contributes her ability to spell from being an avid reader. Bakke contributes her knack to spell to a 7th grade teacher who was a real "stickler." Bakke also loves to read and do crossword puzzles. Scheevel, another strong reader who has represented Harmony in the spelling bees for many years, stated that she will never forget how to spell "dachshund," a difficult word she missed one year. She concludes that it is time to retire now, and go out a champion. Congratulations to the Harmony Community Healthcare spelling team for their 2009 success.
