The students in grades seven through twelve are in the midst of new initiatives this fall. The secondary school has embraced a positive new approach that is called Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions. The approach is becoming more widely acclaimed throughout the country and Lanesboro is the fourth group of schools in Minnesota to come on board. An overview of the program deals with consistent and clearly defined expectations that are both taught and recognized throughout the school.

One of the ways that this new initiative is being implemented is through the use of homeroom time at the start of each school day. Part of the beauty of this program is that existing systems can be tied in, including lyceums for students. Monday, November 16th, the students attended a lyceum dealing with healthy choices. Sharon Muns, from the Mayo Clinic, led a presentation that addressed, among other things: teen driving safety, drinking and driving, riding with someone who has been drinking, and being distracted while driving.

As the juniors and seniors are preparing for post-secondary options, the school is in the second year of utilizing a great counseling tool called Naviance. This is a web-based tool that will help students and parents do many things regarding the future of their child. From notifications of college visits, career interest inventories, all the way to applying for their respective schools, Naviance can help with all of it. There is parent access as well as student access. While juniors and seniors are more likely to use all of the features, the school will be helping younger students to begin thinking about life after high school.
