SMIF awards grant to Lanesboro Local Inc.

Today Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) announced that Lanesboro Local Inc. (LL), the new and highly successful nonprofit marketplace for local food and goods, was selected for an entrepreneur grant of $19,400. The funding will help pay an executive director and launch a coordinated local foods and local products campaign.
The grant is an outgrowth of an earlier SMIF Town Meeting initiative grant, which focused on growing entrepreneurism for the town of Lanesboro and surrounding areas.
According to Loni Kemp of LL's board of directors, there has already been a significant impact on the economic vitality of not only Lanesboro, but the surrounding area. "Our online marketplace brings people together-people who are committed to 'living local.' It's really a sustainable model that has impacted both the community's physical and economic health."
Local entrepreneurs are making this happen - from growers and producers of vegetables, meat and dairy products, to retail businesses and artists. Lanesboro Local (www.lanesborolocal.org), also a bricks and mortar shop on Main Street, has been active since June.
"We are pleased to award Lanesboro Local this incentive grant," said Tim Penny, SMIF President & CEO. "The early success of this nonprofit and the area producers and consumers who are helping enhance economic vibrancy are testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the community, and that of southeastern Minnesota."
In addition to entrepreneurship, the Foundation also funds workforce projects related to engaged elders and career exploration/experiential learning for youth. The next round of incentive grants will be announced in early February, 2010.
