An estimated 73 million "Pennies for Patients" will be donated to the Minnesota Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of local students who are survivors of leukemia and lymphoma.
December 29, 2009-GOLDEN VALLEY, MN - More than 315,000 students in 710 schools throughout Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota are registered for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's 19th Annual Pennies for Patients program this January and February. "Pennies for Patients is an educational service learning project that teaches students that giving--even if it's just a penny--can make a real difference," said Angie Lundeen, Pennies for Patients Campaign Director.
Pennies for Patients is a national program for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in which elementary and secondary school students donate their spare change to help fund lifesaving cancer research and services for patients. Pennies and other spare change are donated in honor of 34 local student Heroes who are blood cancer survivors. There are 34 students serving as 2010 Heroes. "It means so much to have the support of your peers when you're going through the cancer journey," said 2010 Hero Deandra, a leukemia survivor. "It's amazing how much money is raised for research and patient services when the pennies start to pile up." Last year, students in 25,000 schools throughout the country raised more than $19 million.
This year, Domino's Pizza®, WCCO Radio, KOTA , KYYX, KMXA and KIZZ have partnered with the Minnesota Chapter's Pennies for Patients program. The top fundraising classroom at each qualifying school receives a Domino's Pizza® Party (Good for six large one topping pizzas. Delivery where available) and the top ten fundraising schools in each state will be announced on the radio March 19.
This cause is critical to students, because leukemia is the number one cancer is children and young adults. The goal of Pennies for Patients is not only to raise funds to support patient programs and research, but it is to teach students of all ages the importance and joy of giving. Last year, Oak Point Intermediate School in Eden Prairie, MN was the top fundraising school for the Minnesota Chapter and the top fundraising school nationally, raising $42,858.24.
