Lanesboro Arts Center in Lanesboro, Minnesota, will present the Juried High School Art Show Jan. 16-30, 2010. Free to the public, the exhibit will feature 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional work by students in grades 9-12 from Chatfield Chosen Valley (Kelly Puent, art teacher); Fillmore-Central (Jason Detert, art teacher); Lanesboro (Krista Flaig, art teacher); and Rushford-Peterson (Cher Krueger, art teacher). On Saturday, Jan. 16, there will be an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. at the Lanesboro Arts Center galleries, 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro, Minnesota.
The life-size sculpture pictured here was created through teamwork by Fillmore-Central students under the direction of art teacher Jason Detert. First, students were introduced to the sculptural work of George Segal (American painter & sculptor 1924-2000). Then, in teams of five, they were tasked with creating two plaster-casted people showing some sort of interaction between the two sculptures. Each of the five team members had to have at least one body part cast (hands, forearms, torsos, feet, neck, head, etc.); these were then connected to create the whole "person." Finally, realistic details were added to give the casted people more realism: hair, clothing, accessories, etc.
The exhibit is supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board. Current hours at the Lanesboro Arts Center galleries are Tues.-Sat. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Lanesboro Arts Center is the new name of the recently merged nonprofit organizations Cornucopia Art Center and Lanesboro Art Council. Providing year-round arts programming for more than twenty-five years, the mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages.
