Lanesboro Arts Center in Lanesboro, Minnesota, will present a new exhibit: "Birds, Beasts and Figures" Feb. 6 - April 4, 2010. Free to the public, the exhibit will feature ceramic sculpture by Robin Murphy, an artist from Bayfield, Wisconsin. An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 6-8 p.m. at the Arts Center galleries (103 Parkway Ave N.). The reception is free and the public is invited to attend and meet the artist.
Robin Murphy has shown her work in juried and solo exhibitions throughout the United States for more than a decade. In the past two years, her work has undergone major transitions-from functional ceramics to animal and figurative sculpture. Once she decided to abandon the pots and bowls, a new door opened up artistically for the artist. Function and decoration were no longer the issue; it was now about the animals and figures and how they exist as objects in contemporary society . . . what are they doing, asking, implying? Those questions became the basis for investigation with the clay. Robin Murphy received her M.F.A. from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has taught in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Minnesota, Duluth and various art centers.
The exhibit is supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board. January-February hours at the Lanesboro Arts Center galleries are Tues-Sat 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. In March the galleries will also be open on Sundays from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Lanesboro Arts Center is the new name of the recently merged nonprofit organizations Cornucopia Art Center and Lanesboro Art Council. Providing year-round arts programming for more than twenty-five years, its mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages.
