Lanesboro Arts Center is hosting writer Sarah Stonich as Artist in Residence for four weeks: Jan. 11 - Feb. 8, 2010. During her residency, Sarah will be working on finishing a volume of essays about northern Minnesota entitled: Shelter: Places Lost and Found. She will also be meeting with a local book club to discuss her most recent novel, The Ice Chorus. The public is invited to a free event: a Reading by Sarah Stonich, followed by a Writers' Discussion Round-table on Wednesday evening, Feb. 3, 7:00 pm at the Lanesboro Arts Center galleries (103 Parkway Ave N, Lanesboro, Minn.). For more information contact Sara at 507-467-2446 or info@lanesboroarts.org or www.lanesboroarts.org.
Internationally-acclaimed Minneapolis author Sarah Stonich is well-known for her fiction novels, These Granite Islands and The Ice Chorus. Sarah's current project is her first full-length volume of non-fiction, an autobiographical collection of essays entitled Shelter: Places Lost and Found. Shelter chronicles her return to northern Minnesota and her struggles there in buying and clearing raw land and building three tiny, Finnish-style structures in an off-the-grid wilderness. The structures are to be a writing retreat, a legacy for her son, and a memorial to her father-who was once a ranger, logger and wilderness guide in what is now the BWCAW (boundary waters canoe area wilderness). Sarah Stonich is the recipient of a Loft McKnight Career Development Grant (2004), a Minnesota State Arts Board Grant (2000), and a Loft McKnight Award for Fiction (1999).
In Lanesboro, Minnesota, the Lanesboro Residency Program has been providing opportunities for emerging artists to create new work and integrate work into the local community since 2001. Lanesboro Arts Center Residencies include stipend and live/work space. Annual application deadline is June 30. For guidelines or more information, contact Lanesboro Arts Center, 507-467-2446 or info@lanesboroarts.org or www.lanesboroarts.org.
The 'Lanesboro Arts Center' is the new name of recently merged organizations the Lanesboro Art Council and the Cornucopia Art Center. Its mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages.
