The Fillmore County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public to help reduce the hazards created by snow being plowed across or onto public roads and right-of-ways.
Fillmore County Sheriff Daryl Jensen said that because of the above average snowfall this winter, extra snow has complicated what normally is a minimal problem. Sheriff Jensen said that this winter has been especially difficult for the Fillmore County snowplows because of the amount of snow they have to deal with. Jensen said that many people are plowing snow onto the roads or are moving snow across the roads and dumping it into the right-of-ways. The deposited snow can be hazardous to unsuspecting drivers, including snowplows. Snow piled in the right-of-way can cause unnecessary drifting and sight obstructions.
Jensen said that Minnesota Statue 160.2715 clearly makes it unlawful to deposit snow or ice on any public road. This included plowing, blowing or shoveling. Any violation of that section is a misdemeanor.
Sheriff Jensen said that the sheriff's office will be working with the Fillmore County Highway Department to address the problem. Anyone who violates the statute will be asked to correct the problem or face possible charges.
