The last two years a series of events under the general title "Pasture Walks" have taken place in Southeast Minnesota. Generally, we have started with an indoor activity and then later in the summer gone to a number of farm locations to observe various grazing practices. In 2010, we are going to start with two indoor Pasture Walk events.
Pasture Walk # 1, will be held Saturday, March 20th, at 1:00 pm in Room 108, County Office Building, 902 Houston Street NW, Preston MN. The topic of the day will be direct marketing of meats. The featured speaker will be Ryan Cox, University of Minnesota Extension Meats Specialist. His discussion will be on "Marketing Your Own Beef to Consumers." We are also planning to have a panel of local livestock direct marketers tell us of their experiences.
Pasture Walk #2 will be held Saturday, March 27th, at 1:00 pm in the Wilson Town Hall, located at 22922 East Burns Valley Road, Winona or just off I-90 and Highway 43 North toward Winona.
The topics and speakers for the day are "Nutrition of Cattle on Pasture," Alfredo DiCostanzo, extension animal scientist-beef cattle nutrition; and "Organic Certification of Livestock," Jim Riddle, organic outreach coordinator, University of Minnesota. There will be time for questions and discussion.
There is no fee and no registration needed for these events. Organizers for the Pasture Walk series include John Zinn, NRCS; Jeff Koster, RC&D; Dean Thomas, Root River Grazing Specialist, SWCD; Winona County Extension Educator Tom Van der Linden and Fillmore/Houston County Extension Educator Jerry Tesmer. For further information call Jerry at 507-765-3896, Preston or 507-725-5807, Caledonia.
