New and exciting happenings at the Harmony Public Library

Thanks to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a generous donation to the Harmony Public Library by Tami Hoag, the Harmony Public Library will be getting three new public access computers and one Children's Learning Center computer this year, with more computers to come next year.

The Children's Learning Center will consist of the two original Gates grant computers that have educational software and these two computers will not be connected to the internet any longer. The new computer coming this year for the Children's Learning Center will have a keyboard, mouse and headphones that are colorful and sized for children to use. It will also include internet access, and the following software for children:

1. The Oregon Trail: A thrilling trailblazing adventure that builds real-life skills! As the leader of a wagon party, you'll choose your team and supplies, read maps, plan your route, and guide your team through unknown wilderness.

2. Read Rabbit Personalized Math Ages 4-6: Join Reader Rabbit and friends at the amusement park, where math is your ticket to thrilling rides and fun-filled games. Hop along from the arcade to the roller coaster, using numbers and math concepts to solve puzzles, win prizes and build math skills.

3. Reader Rabbit 2nd Grade, Mis-cheese-ious Dreamship Adventures?: When the fabulous Dreamship crash lands into gooey Mt. Cheesemore, Reader Rabbit and Sam must find it before the bungling pirates get there first. Our heroes need your help using skills in grammar, reading, science, fractions, and telling time. With seven cheese-ilicious activities, you're in for a giant slice of adventure.

4. Reader Rabbit Personalized Math Ages 6-9: Adventures on Pirate Island: Help Sam the Lion and Reader Rabbit rebuild their boat on the mysterious and funny Pirate Island. Help repair the ship, give the pirates the slip, and compete in a wacky boat race. Along the way, you'll have all kinds of fun with numbers as you practice your skills and develop math confidence.

5. Reader Rabbit Learn to Read with Phonics Preschool & Kindergarten: Join Reader Rabbit on a joyful journey to build reading confidence and success! Develop essential reading skills while exploring 26 Letter Lands filled with fun phonics activities and engaging storybooks. Practice language arts skills while playing with four fabulous word-making machines at the Word Factory. This program is a first step toward building a life-long love of reading.

6. Reader Rabbit Personalized Reading Ages 4-6: In Search of the Reading Kingdom: Help Reader Rabbit and Sam the Lion on their mission to find Sam's crown. You'll travel to many different Letter Lands and take giant steps toward real reading! The Reading Kingdom is a great place to build immediate confidence and success in reading.

7. Jump Start 2nd Grade: The adventure starts in a creaky elevator hidden in the schoolhouse wall. Follow CJ the Frog and his sidekick Edison on a journey into their secret clubhouse. Use your math, science, grammar, and other skills to solve the many challenges found in 22 interactive games.

8. Clifford the Big Red Dog Thinking Adventures: Travel through Clifford's fun-filled neighborhood and help prepare for his BIG birthday party by completing entertaining activities that develop problem solving, reasoning, and creativity. Track down Clifford's birthday package, decorate his HE cake, and more. The celebration begins once you have everything you need to throw a party BIG enough for Clifford!

9. Curious George Preschool Learning Games: That ever-so-mischievous monkey is at it again! Join Curious George as he plays exciting arcade games! He's hunting down circles, targeting triangles and having the time of his life with patterns, shapes and letters! Come join the fun in a series of skill-building games especially designed for active learners. All the fun of family arcade games, now for younger kids too!

10. Carmen Sandiego's ThinkQuick Challenge: Carmen Sandiego is stealing the world's knowledge! Outwit Carmen Sandiego's cohorts in a series of fast-paced challenges that test your knowledge in a variety of subjects. Play on your own or with up to three other ambitious ACME agents. Travel the world, outthink the KnowBots and capture the crooks!

11. Carmen Sandiego Word Detective: Word is out! In an unspeakable attempt to turn the English language on its ear, Carmen Sandiego has invented the Babble-On machine, a diabolical device that transforms language into utter nonsense. As Agent 13, your mission is to free a dozen babbling ACME agents by completing over 60 activities that will further develop your spelling, grammar, and vocabulary skills.

12. Carmen Sandiego Math Detective: The world is in desperate need of your clever mathematical mind! Carmen Sandiego has developed a sinister shrinking device that has already taken the Mount out of Everest and the Grand out of the world's most famous Canyon! To restore these and other cherished landmarks to their rightful size, you must embark on 12 strategic adventures to solve hundreds of skill-building word problems and equations.

13. School Zone Alphabet Express Preschool: This will take you for a magical trip to a friendly place where children gain the alphabet skills they need to learn how to read and spell. It combines games, puzzles, movies, songs, and more for hours of fun and basic skills development.

14. Sesame Street's Elmo's World: Elmo's Favorite games and Activities: Children are invited to explore food, pets, telephones, bugs, shoes and farms though easy point-and-click activities. As children sing, play and explore, the games in this educational software automatically adjust to their ability level. Through helpful feedback and engaging activities, Elmo's World encourages children to have fun as they expand their imagination and creativity.

15. Dora the Explorer's Lost and Found Adventure: Oh No! Dora and Tico Need Your Help. Tico's car is out of nuts. With Catchy, the Explorer Star, you can help Dora and Tico capture enough nuts to power Tico's car. Don't forget to look out for Swiper! You must stop him before he swipes the picnic items again.

16. Go Diego Go! Great Dinosaur Rescue & Safari Rescue: Build essential preschool skills including reasoning, memory, creative and language while counting the Plesiosaurus as you help Maia cross the lagoon or find and follow the Maiasaura footprints to Egg Island in the Great Dinosaur Rescue. With Safari Rescue you will learn numbers, colors, shapes and more with Diego, Juma, and Baby Jaguar as you help Diego fix the animals in the Serengeti and make music with Diego and Juma.

17. Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon: What if you landed in a strange place and had to get home? To get home, they have to build a rocket-but first they've got to find all the parts! 18. Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo: The bridge is out, zoo chow is running low and six baby animals are missing! 19. Bob the Builder Can-Do Zoo: Animals are on the loose! Help Bob and the Can-Do crew build five habitats for the brand new Bobland Bay Zoo. 20. Scooby-Doo! 4th Grade Learning System: The Scary Stone Dragon: Scooby and the gang have won a trip to China! While there, a stone dragon statue has come to life and is scaring away all of the visitors! Help find out who is behind the scheme before the New Year's festivities are ruined. 21. Math Missions The Amazing Arcade Adventure Grades 3-5: Save Spectacle City by disrupting Randall Underling's plan to drive all the stores out of business and take over the city. The citizens are counting on you to solve real-world math challenges in the uniquely entertaining stores and make them successful again. For your help, you'll earn money to open your own arcade-where you'll choose a name, pick arcade games to play, set prices, and more!

22. Math Missions The Race to Spectacle City Arcade Grades K-2: Use real-world math skills to earn money for arcade games! Catch the bus, subway, or ferry to travel the city and tackle fun math challenges in the stores of Spectacle City. Build addition, subtraction, geometry, and problem-solving skills while constructing a skyscraper, sorting toys at the toy store, counting types of candy at the outdoor market, and more. Earn money for each correct answer-then use it to play exciting games in the arcade!
