The Lanesboro Barn Dance kicks off the 2010 season on Saturday, March 27. This early dance begins the sixteenth year of this series at the Sons of Norway Hall in beautiful Lanesboro, MN. Dancing starts at 8:00 PM and continues until 11:00 PM.
Sue Hulsether will teach and call dances from American folk traditions, guided by a passion for creating positive human connections. Respected and sought after throughout the region as a square dance caller, Sue leads groups of all sorts, sizes, ages and abilities in dance. She is recognized for her clear teaching, welcoming manner at the microphone, engaging humor, and her uncanny ability to choose the perfect dances for whatever group is in the room. She has gathered her wide repertoire from callers and dances around the country and weaves strands of tradition and history into her instruction.
Sue is also a captivating flatfoot dancer in the Appalachian clogging tradition. Formerly a member of the St. Paul-based Wild Goose Chase Cloggers and currently dancing with Shoefly! of Gays Mills, WI, she has taught people of all ages to enjoy its rhythmic delights. Sue will provide a short clog dance workshop during the evening.
Music for the Barn Dance will be provided by Gail Heil on fiddle and Bob Bovee on guitar and harmonica. Their wide repertoire of southern and Midwestern dance tunes includes not only the hoedowns for square dances, but also traditional waltzes, schottisches, polkas and two-steps. Just having returned from a short tour performing in Oklahoma and Nebraska, Bob and Gail will be charged up for an exciting dance!
This year the Lanesboro Barn Dance is supported in part by a grant from the Southeast Minnesota Arts Council through funding from the Minnesota State Legislature.
