Root River Grazing Specialist Dean Thomas has arranged for a field day at the Mike (Tom) Boelter farm located at 29254 181st Ave., Wykoff, MN, on Saturday, April 10th, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
The corn silage field was seeded by helicopter with rye on August 17, 2009. The corn silage was then harvested on September 24th. Boelter's plan is to use it for early season spring grazing.
They will share with you information on seeding rates and feed value of this early season pasture. This is based on pasture data and analysis collected in 2009. In a normal year, this rye might also be available for late fall grazing (not 2009).
To get to the site: from Preston, MN, ,north on Hwy 52 for approximately six miles to Fountain, or from Rochester, MN, south on Hwy 52 for 30 miles to Fountain, MN. In Fountain, go west on Co. Rd 8 for approximately seven miles, then right (north) on Co. Rd. 5 about two miles to stop sign. Turn left (west) on Co. Rd. 4 for about ½ mile, then turn right(north) on 181st Ave. Follow the field day signs.
In case of bad weather, listen to KFIL radio. The Field Day will not be rescheduled. Instead, the information will be presented by PowerPoint by Dean Thomas and John Zinn, NRCS Grazing Specialists in Room 108, Fillmore County Office Building, 902 Houston St. NW, Preston. After this date, we are assuming everyone will be in the field if there is good weather!
For further information, contact Dean Thomas, Fillmore SWCD Office, 507-765-3878 #128.
