Mark Holmen elected as MN Angus Association Vice President

Mark Holmen, Fountain, Minnesota, was elected by the Minnesota Angus Association Board of Directors to the position of vice president at their annual meeting. The meeting, and other activities, were held in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, March 6 and 7, 2010. Holmen has served two years of his first three-year term on the board of directors. Holmen succeeds Dustin Martin of Blue Earth, Minnesota, who was elected to the position of association president. Other members of the board of directors are: Dick Walser, Minnesota Lake; Gregg Johnson, Pipestone, MN; Bruce Waugh, Goodhue, MN; Tom Bullerman, Adrian. Pete Hassing completed a three year term on the board. Randy Mitteness, Benson, Minnesota, was elected to his first term. James Scharpe of Arlington serves the Association as executive secretary.

The Minnesota Angus Auxiliary conducted their annual meeting, as did the junior association. Emily Scholtz of Comfrey was elected as the junior association vice president; Betsy Hanson, Marshall, was elected to the position of secretary. Taylor Waugh, Goodhue, was elected as communication director and Luke Nord, Wolverton, was elected to fulfill membership director responsibilities. The juniors choose Kelsey Glaess, Cannon Falls, and Betsy Hansen, Marshall, as the delegates to the National Junior Angus Association Annual Meeting; Taylor Waugh, Goodhue, will be the alternate delegate. They join the other members of the leadership team: President Alissa Stai of New London, and Treasurer Matt Purfeerst of Faribault.

Saturday morning the association hosted an educational seminar at Simon Arena. Speakers for the seminar included Mark Schoenfeld from View Track with new technology in record keeping. Alfredo DisCostanzo, University of Minnesota Beef Team, presented information on the value of source-verified cattle. Zack Hall for Igenity and Bryce Schumann from the American Angus Association explained new DNA testing to enhance EPD's. Mr. Schumann also answered questions from the group regarding the American Angus Association.

The Association's annual banquet was held Saturday evening at Grandpa's Event Center in Cannon Falls. Dennis Sullivan of Kellogg was honored as the Breeder of the Year. Denny has been a long-time member and strong supporter of the Minnesota Angus Association. He has helped numerous 4-H and FFA members in his area with their Angus projects. Emily Scholtz, Comfrey, and Kelsey Gleass were selected as Miss Minnesota Angus for 2010. Alisha Nord, Wolverton, received the Show Heifer of the Year award and Cullen Walser, Minnesota Lake, received the Show Steer of the Year award. These awards are based on points received for placings at a number of selected Angus shows. Mark Mitteness, Benson, was was chosen to receive the association scholarship. Alisha Nord was the recipient of the Outstanding Leadership award.

The state sale was held March 7, at Simon Arena in Cannon Falls. State sale consigners select Breeders' Choice award winners from the consignments. The Breeder's Choice award winner starts the sale in each division. Breeders' Choice award winners were Dandy Acres, Gregg and Neil Johnson of Pipestone for Bulls. Shady Hill Farms, Dustin Martin of Blue Earth received the award for open heifers. Becker's Angus, David Becker of Askow received the award for Bred Heifers/cows. Sullivan Angus, Denny and Tim Sullivan, Kellogg was chosen as the Breeders' Choice for Pen of Bred Heifers, and Bullerman Angus, Tom Bullerman, Adrian, was selected as the Breeders' Choice for Pen of Open Heifers. Nineteen bulls averaged $1432; 6 bred females averaged $1425; 34 open heifers averaged $1358; 1 embryo lot averaged $600.
