2009 Minnesota Ag statistics

Each year I receive a copy of the Minnesota Ag Statistics. In the past, I've tended to focus on where Fillmore and Houston County rank amongst the other counties in the state in various commodity areas. I could always count on Fillmore being number one in beef cows, but this year Otter Tail County passed Fillmore County by two hundred beef cows, with Fillmore falling to number two.
Luckily, in state rankings, Minnesota is number one in five categories: oats, sugarbeets, sweet corn for processing, green peas for processing, and turkeys. The oats was actually a correction; the initial report had Wisconsin above Minnesota.
Minnesota is also highly ranked in spring wheat, canola, and cheddar cheese at number two. The third highest rank among states is in the categories of soybeans and all categories of hogs.
The strong showing continues with Minnesota fourth among the states for crop receipts, corn, sunflowers, dry edible beans, and flaxseed and fifth among states for total cheese, mink pelts, and honey produced. The livestock has a strong showing and ranks sixth for red meat production, milk cows, and milk production.

The 2009 numbers are just being added to the state website, they have soybean yields for Fillmore County at 44 bushels per acre for 2009 and Houston County yields at 45.5 bushels per acre. The corn yields are 176 bushels per acre for Fillmore County and 172 bushels per acre for Houston County.
