Best Acetochlor management

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has revised the "Water Quality Best Management Practices for Acetochlor". These voluntary Best Management Practices (BMPs) were developed to address the presence of acetochlor and its breakdown products in Minnesota's groundwater and surface water from normal agricultural use.

At the present time acetochlor is a very small problem, and we want to keep it that way so its use as an herbicide remains an option. I expect the revised Acetochlor BMPs will be a major portion of the Pesticide Recertification trainings in the next three years.

If the BMPs are proven ineffective, mandatory restrictions on herbicide use and practices may be required. The BMPs may also refer to mandatory label use requirements. Always read product labels. The products which contain acetochlor include Breakfree, Cadence, Confidence, Degree, Fieldmaster, FulTime, Harness, Imperium, Keystone, Overtime, SureStart, Surpass, Top Notch, Tremor, and Volley.

What follows is a brief summary of the revised Best Management Practices:

1. Adopt the core "BMPs for All Agricultural Herbicides" when applying acetochlor.

2. Limit acetochlor applications to the lowest effective labeled rate.

3. Maintain an application setback from surface water, tile inlets, wells, and sinkholes.

4. Maintain vegetative filter strips between areas where acetochlor is applied and points where field runoff enters surface water, tile inlets, and sinkholes.

5. Reduce acetochlor use by using other weed control methods.

6. Adopt conservation tillage practices appropriate for your farm's topography and in SE Minnesota karst areas.

7. Soil incorporate acetochlor.

8. Use precision application methods.

The complete recently revised 2010 "Water Quality Best Management Practices for Acetochlor" and the 2010 listing of "Herbicides Containing Acetochlor and Atrazine" are available with further information on the Acetochlor and other BMP's at: http://www.mda.state.mn.us/protecting/bmps/herbicidebmps/bmpdocs.aspx.
