By Jim Hoiness and Brad Hoiness, Owners of Harmony Foods, Preston Foods and Rushford Foods
This past week we began the move back to IGA in our stores in Preston, Harmony and Rushford. This decision has been made after careful consideration and we feel bringing the IGA image, products and programs back to our stores will allow us to better serve you. IGA had been a trusted brand in our communities for over 30 years up until 2003. In 2003, with the bankruptcy of Fleming Companies, our supplier at that time, we were forced to switch to another grocery wholesaler. We chose Nash Finch Company as our main supplier, although they didn't supply the IGA products, they have been a good partner and have served us well over the past seven years.
Our new full service wholesaler, Affiliated Foods Midwest (AFM) is a cooperative serving over 850 grocery stores, owned by it's member retailers. In other words, we as retail grocery store owners we have invested in our warehouse Affiliated Foods Midwest and are now member/owners. Affiliated Foods has had steady growth since 1931 and in 2009 they built a new distribution facility in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the facility our products will come from. AFM offers us an efficient distribution system with improved technology assist us in business operations. This change also offers us new opportunities partnering with other AFM retailers to buy and share truckloads of key products, which will allow us to keep our prices competitive.
IGA stands for the International Grocers Alliance, and there are more than 4,000 IGA Stores in 40 countries. Affiliated Foods is the supplier of IGA brand products in the upper Midwest. In addition IGA products, AFM also supplies Shurfine and Shurfresh branded products, which you'll also see in our stores. In additions to the strong products, IGA has developed an extensive on-line training program to assist us with staff development to better serve you, our customers. Our IGA partners will conduct store assessments throughout the year to help us achieve a higher level of service and standards of operation. Lastly, "HOMETOWN PROUD" is a registered trademark of IGA that fits our mission in the communities we serve. We will continue to do business as "Rushford Foods", "Harmony Foods" and "Preston Foods". On behalf of our staff, we ask for your patience and continued support as we transition to IGA and other new brands in our efforts to serve you better. Your feedback is always welcome, please contact us directly at 507-864-2878 or rushiga@acegroup.cc.
