Lanesboro Arts Center will present award-winning musician Diane Jarvi in concert on Friday, April 16, 7:30 pm at the St. Mane Theatre in Lanesboro, Minn. Featuring Finnish and Scandinavian music, the concert is being held in conjunction with the Commonweal Theatre Company's Ibsen Festival, and with theater, film, food, art and family events scheduled all weekend long. Go to www.ibsenfest.org for more information.
Diane Jarvi is a versatile singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, playing the guitar, several kinds of kanteles (zither-like stringed instruments), and the jouhikko (a 3-stringed bow lyre). Her repertoire incorporates Finnish Tangoes, which first emerged in the 1930s and are now deeply identified with Finnish culture; songs from the Russian-influenced Karelian region; music from the Sami, whose ancient culture has roots in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and the Russian Kola peninsula; and songs from Ingria. Diane Jarvi is a published poet and an exceptional singer, having won several awards and a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship. Her Finnish heritage led her to an intensive study of Finnish music in Helsinki.
Concert tickets are $12 / $10 arts center members. Tickets are available in advance at the Arts Center galleries at 103 Parkway Ave N in Lanesboro (open Tues.-Sat. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.), and at the door one hour prior to the performance at the St. Mane Theatre, 206 Parkway Ave. N in Lanesboro. For more information call 507-467-2446.
Presented by the Lanesboro Arts Center, its mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages. For more information: 507-467-2446 / info@lanesboroarts.org / www.lanesboroarts.org.
