In 2004, Fillmore County Public Health started a Safe Communities Coalition (SC) with local community partners from the 4Es of engineering, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and education. The goal of the Fillmore County Safe Communities Safe Roads (SCSR) Coalition is to support the Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities and crashes on Minnesota roadways. More information about TZD can be found at: http://www.minnesotatzd.org/.

Locally, the Fillmore County SCSR Coalition supports TZD efforts by:

•Developing comprehensive traffic safety plans to make roadways safer.

•Holding bi-monthly meetings to network and plan traffic safety activities.

•Participating in regional and state meetings and programs regarding TZD.

•Reviewing fatal and serious injury crashes to determine how future crashes can be prevented through education, enforcement, or engineering.

•Serving as a resource regarding traffic safety laws such as the new primary law for seatbelts, booster seat law for children, and ignition interlock law for previously impaired drivers.

•Promoting traffic safety messages regarding speeding, seat belt use, and speeding through education, enforcement, media, signage, and training.

•Conducting community presentations regarding traffic safety issues to local government officials, worksites, or alcohol retailers.

•Working with community members at highest risk for crashes, such as school-aged youth, to teach them about their behaviors and the potential driving risks.

•Providing child passenger restraint education to child care providers and parents.

At this time, citizens are also encouraged to become part of the local Fillmore County Safe Communities Safe Roads Coalition. You may partner with the coalition in many ways such as: participating in coalition meetings, sharing educational materials with your community, helping to conduct traffic monitoring, hosting a traffic safety event, or donating funding for the purchase of car seats for Fillmore County residents who can't afford to purchase them.
