Seed Savers hosts Bird & Wildflower Walks

Seed Savers Exchange will offer "Bird and Wildflower Walks" -- along with a scrumptious Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning, May 1, at Heritage Farm.
Come celebrate spring as you take in nature's finest. The fun begins at 8 a.m. with the first of four bird & wildflower walks. Guided hikes will be available at 8, 9, 10, and 11 a.m. The pancake breakfast, served with locally produced Green's Sugarbush maple syrup, will be offered from 8 to 11 a.m. It's all happening at Seed Savers' Lillian Goldman Visitors Center, 3074 North Winn Road, Decorah. There is no charge; however, a freewill donation will be accepted to help defray expenses.
Bird experts Dennis Carter, retired naturalist with the National Park Service, and Larry Reis, naturalist for Winneshiek County Conservation, will lead the bird & wildflower walks from the visitors center, so bring your binoculars, bird books and comfortable walking shoes and plan on being amazed. Dennis has spotted 119 species in his eight years of birding at Heritage Farm. Carter and Reis will talk about bird habitat, whether or not the birds you spot are nesting or migratory, and more.
Some of the wildflowers you can expect to see include Dutchman's breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), wild ginger, bloodroot, hepatica, bluebells, violets, several different anemones, and more. Events and Education Manager at Seed Savers Exchange, Shirley Vermace suggests that you "grab your comfortable walking shoes and favorite wildflower and bird books and join us in this ritual of spring as we wander the woods and prairies of Heritage Farm." She urges participants to wear long pants and scarves or hats.
Visitors may also see our demonstration gardens coming to life; our newborn and "mama" Ancient White Park cattle, and young heritage poultry including the White Laced Black Polish chicken, the Sicilian Buttercup chicken, the Chinese goose, the Cayuga duck, the Blue Jersey Giant chicken and the Narragansett turkey. Seeds, transplants, seed potatoes and garden items -- including bird and wildflower books -- will be available at the visitors center. Larry Reis's new book, Noting Nature, will also be available for sale and can be signed by the author that day.
Getting to Heritage Farm
Heritage Farm is located 6.5 miles north of Decorah, IA at 3074 North Winn Road. From the south: from the intersection of Hwys 9 & 52, drive 5.5 miles north on Hwy 52 in Decorah and turn right on North Winn Road (watch for blue signs) for one mile, then right into Heritage Farm's Visitors Center parking lot.
From the north; from the Minnesota border, drive about 10.25 miles south on Hwy 52 and turn left on North Winn Road (watch for blue signs) for one mile, then right into Heritage Farm's Visitors Center.
