Posted in Education

In a continuing effort to meet budget restrictions, the Kingsland School Board passed a resolution Monday night approving and directing the administration to make recommendations for reductions in programs and positions. The following programs and positions will be reduced:

•1.0 FTE physical education teaching position

•.3 FTE music education teaching position

•.8 FTE elementary teacher

•1.0 FTE interim principal

•Dashir Management Services.

The list of positions and teachers will balance the budget and set up similar action next year as the board grapples with reduced enrollment and cut backs from the state.

Jennifer Dessner gave the board an update on Community Education. She said that the Pre School Program has really taken off with 109 students enrolled this year. For the summer months she said that they are projecting 80 students. "It's basically a daycare program that costs $40 per family registration and $2.50 per hour."

Kathy Beevers presented the board the latest enrollment and financial information. She said that the anticipated State Aid receipts were cut by ½ million last month. This was something that was planned for. She said that expenses are right on line as well as anticipated enrollment.

She also updated everyone on the search for a superintendent. Beevers said that search applications went to every superintendent in Minnesota attempting to lure someone to apply for the open position at Kingsland. The application information contained an overview of the job and a leadership profile. Applications are due Friday the 23rd.

There were some personnel changes approved by the board. Karen Welander and Bobbie Erickson retired from the district along with the resignation of John Jones. A Leave of Absence Request was approved for Jen Schmeling. The position has been posted but so far there has been no response. John Dols was hired as the Director of Facility Maintenance, Operations & Grounds and Kelly Miller was hired as a long-term substitute.

There will be a special board meeting on Monday, April 26th, and a regular board meeting on Monday, May 17th.
