Seed Savers Exchange receives 2010 Golden Silo Award

Seed Savers Exchange Event & Education Manager Shirley Vermace, holding the Alan Hutchings Outstanding Visionary Golden Silo Award from Silos & Smokestack, is pictured with keynote speaker Mary Swander, the Poet Laureate of the state of Iowa.
Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area honored Seed Savers Exchange of Decorah with the Alan Hutchings Outstanding Visionary award at the annual Golden Silo Awards luncheon. The event was held at the Sky Event Centre in Waterloo on April 7.
The Outstanding Visionary award honors an individual, organization, business, agency or local government that has shown sustained support for the Heritage Area for more than five years, created a legacy in heritage development and provided leadership in the heritage development movement.
"This is a great honor for our organization," said Aaron Whaley, acting president of Seed Savers Exchange. "We are proud to be affiliated with the Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area in northeast Iowa."
Also receiving Golden Silo Awards were:
• Richardson-Jackway Historic Site, Aurora, Outstanding Preservation in Agriculture;
• African American Museum of Iowa, Cedar Rapids, Outstanding Partner;
• Cascade Community Enhancement Corporation, Cascade, Outstanding Volunteer;
• Wapsipinicon Mill Museum, Independence, People's Choice - Site of the Year.
"This year's Golden Silo Award recipients demonstrate the commitment and work ethic that has made Iowa the center of American agriculture, feeding both the United States and the world," commented Silos & Smokestacks President Don Short.
The keynote speaker for the event was Mary Swander, Poet Laureate for the state of Iowa. Swander performed a vignette from her play Farmscape, a docudrama capturing the changing rural environment.
Seed Savers Exchange is a non-profit organization whose more than 12,000 members are committed to the preservation and distribution of heirloom seeds. Located on 890-acre Heritage Farm, its collection contains more than 25,000 seeds and plants, making it the largest non-governmental seed vault of its kind in the United States. Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa.
