According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs (OJP), a sexual assault occurs every 83 minutes in Minnesota. The Cost of Sexual Violence Report released by the Minnesota Health Department in 2007 reported that 61,000 Minnesota children and adults were sexually assaulted in 2005, some of them more than once, for a total of 77,000 assaults. While these numbers are disturbing, keep in mind that Minnesota has a long history of offering top quality assistance to survivors of sexual violence. In fiscal year 2005, there were 55 programs in Minnesota providing services for victims of sexual assault, educating the community, and initiating prevention efforts throughout Minnesota. The Victim Services program for Dodge, Fillmore and Olmsted Counties is one of these programs. The Fillmore County office is located in the courthouse in Preston, Minnesota, with a full-time advocate available. A 24-hour sexual assault crisis line is available to respond to those in crisis. That number is 1-877-289-0636. For more information about ways that you can help prevent sexual violence before it happens, please call the Rochester office at 507-328-7270 or the Preston office at 507-765-2805.
