Brooklyn Park, Minn., May 2, 2010 - Ryan Vernosh, a sixth-grade teacher at Maxfield Magnet Elementary School in St. Paul, has been chosen 2010 Minnesota Teacher of the Year.

Vernosh says the core of his education philosophy is "an unshakable belief that all students can and will learn no matter the circumstance. Students living in poverty, students with exceptional needs, students from historically disenfranchised populations, all can and will succeed in my classroom."

Many of the families in the Maxfield neighborhood live in poverty. Vernosh is passionate about culturally relevant teaching, and says the two biggest issues facing education are the achievement gap and social justice. "These gaps are unacceptable and are my driving force as I prepare to teach every day. It is my goal to continue these important conversations and share my experiences of what I and many others have done as we strive to eliminate the achievement gap and move all of our students toward excellence," he said.

Linda Duck, the mother of a Maxfield student, wrote that she was "privileged" to recommend Vernosh for the honor. "I found that Mr. Vernosh is a very rare individual," she said. "He is someone who genuinely cares for his students and gives them the best he can. Because he always expects similar behavior in return, he teaches everyone around him how to be a better person."

Vernosh has taught at Maxfield since 2006 and in St. Paul schools since 2004. He earned his master's degree at the University of St. Thomas and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. He is married with one child.

Education Minnesota, the 70,000-member statewide educators union, organizes and underwrites the Teacher of the Year program, which receives program and award support from the following organizations: SMART Technologies, The Northland Inn, the Harvard Club of Minnesota Foundation, United Educators Credit Union, McDonald's Restaurants of Minnesota, TruStone Financial, Pearson Education and Education Minnesota ESI. This year marks the program's 46th anniversary.

Vernosh is the second teacher from St. Paul to be named Minnesota Teacher of the Year; the first was in 1991. He will be Minnesota's nominee for National Teacher of the Year for 2011.
