The latest Job Vacancy Survey from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development shows that in Southeast Minnesota* there are 18,500 unemployed workers competing for 2,500 unfilled jobs. This means that job seekers outnumber job openings by more than 7-to-1.**

Just two years ago, the ratio of job seekers to job openings in the region was 3-to-1. Since then, job seekers have risen 71 percent; job openings have fallen 30 percent. During this period, job openings fell sharply in two of the region's largest occupational groups: healthcare practitioners/technicians fell 63 percent; and office/administrative support fell 77 percent.

Other major findings for Southeast Minnesota include:

• More than one-third (35 percent) of the openings are temporary or seasonal; more than half (56 percent) are part-time.

• Less than half (45 percent) of the openings offer health care.

• One-third of the openings require education or training beyond high school.

• The median wage for all job openings is $10.05 per hour.***

JOBS NOW's newly updated Cost of Living research shows that in a Southeast Minnesota family of four with both parents working, each worker must earn $13.38 per hour to meet basic needs.
