ST. PAUL, Minn., May 4, 2010: Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher offered his congratulations to all 70,000 state educators on Wednesday, which is National Teacher Day.

"Teachers do so much every day that goes unnoticed," said Dooher. "Everyone can remember at least one special teacher who made a positive difference in their lives. Teachers are committed to their students and their schools. They are the foundation of our communities and it's fitting that we say thank you for all they do."

Teacher Appreciation Week runs May 3-7. The week is dedicated to celebrating the work of teachers around the nation. Many schools hold events to acknowledge the excellence of their teachers, and students take time to share their appreciation for the teachers who help them shape their future. Former students often send thank-you notes.

The National Education Association and the National PTA have recognized the first week in May as Teacher Appreciation Week since the mid 1980s. Eleanor Roosevelt convinced Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day in 1953.
