Interstate State Park will get new sidewalks, new seating areas, and improved accessibility as part of a long awaited face-lift this summer, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Parks and Trails. The northern entrance to the park (the "upper park") and the area surrounding the famed glacial potholes will be the site of a construction project, expected to last through July 1.
The construction will limit access to northern portions of the park on Mondays through Thursdays, but the public will have full access to facilities on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. During this period, there will be full access to the southern entrance of the park and all of its facilities, including the campgrounds. However the DNR advises large groups to visit the park on weekends.
Construction will include improvements to the entrance off of Highway 8, the parking lot, utilities, and the asphalt trail leading through the pothole area to the St. Croix River. Historic walls will be stabilized and rebuilt, and stormwater runoff will be improved throughout the area. The amount of impervious surfaces throughout the area will be reduced.
For current information during the construction period, check the DNR Web site at www.mndnr.gov/stateparks or call the park at 651-465-5711.
