Today Mike Poellinger, Mayor, announced that La Crescent and Dakota Minnesota have received a grant of $456,000 for improvements to owner occupied single family homes. "This is a big deal, said Poellinger, the grant will rehab twenty homes for our low to moderate income residents".

This grant is important to La Crescent and Dakota because it improves the local housing stock, stabilizes neighborhoods, contributes to improved living conditions for residents and stimulates the local economy.

The money must be used to do energy related repairs including replacement of windows, roofs, furnaces, exterior doors and domestic water heating.

Locally the program will be administered by the La Crescent Building Official Paul Kenaga who indicated that "applications will be taken after the notification of release of funds has been received from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED)".

The grant was prepared by Michelle Vrieze from Southeastern Minnesota Development Corporation (SEMDC), Chatfield, MN. Planning Commission Chair Donald Smith said, "The City invested $1000 to have SEMDC write the grant and received a 40000% return. We congratulate and thank SEMDC as they provided the expertise and experience with over 20 years of successful applications for Small Cities Development Grants".

The grants were awarded under the Small Cities Development Program through funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In Minnesota the program is administered by DEED, who makes grants available to cities and townships with populations under 50,000.
