TOLEDO, OHIO, August 13, 2014 – The Board of Trustees of the Toledo Community Foundation has approved a grant from the First Solar Corporate Charitable Fund to RREAL in the amount of $15,000. These funds will be used to install a solar system for the Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity Re-Store building.

Through two opportunities, the First Solar Corporate Charitable Fund provides support to programs that seek to improve the quality of life in communities around the world. The Fund places an emphasis on programs that meet the First Solar Corporate giving values, which include 1) focusing on “green” education initiatives, 2) access to clean energy and water in underserved areas, and 3) furthering the development of innovative and sustainable technologies.

The Rural Renewable Energy Alliance (RREAL) and Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity (LAHFH) have partnered for eight years to create resilient, self-sustainable households among low-income communities. RREAL’s Solar Assistance program provides solar heating systems to low-income families and Habitat provides high-performance, low-cost housing. Together, we can stabilize energy costs in the long-term and make home ownership a reality of low-income families.

The purpose of this request is to strengthen these joint efforts through the installation of photovoltaic modules on LAHFH’s Re-Store building, a social enterprise which sells salvaged building materials. By fostering energy security and stabilizing costs at the local Habitat for Humanity, we can help create an increasingly sustainable financial model for LAHFH. Financial sustainability means that Habitat can empower more families, more effectively.
