On Saturday July 12, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. the Governor’s Civil War Commemoration Task Force and the Silver Creek Cemetery Association will host a Civil War sesquicentennial commemoration and soldier grave rededication celebrating the historical Battle of Tupelo in Mississippi that was fought July 14-15, 1864.

The grave rededication is part of this year’s sesquicentennial ceremonies to commemorate and remember the participation of Minnesota Civil War soldiers by honoring their memory and dedicating grave sites of those who were killed or mortally wounded and returned for burial in Minnesota. This will include the unveiling and dedication of a new stone marker at Silver Creek Cemetery for Private Joseph Cox. Cox was seriously wounded at the Battle of Tupelo and returned home where he died as a result of those wounds. Silver Creek Cemetery is the final resting place for Private Joseph Cox.

The event will include presentations by state and local dignitaries as well as historians on Private Joseph Cox, The Battle of Tupelo and the role of Minnesota soldiers. The ceremony will also include participation by the Houston American Legion Color Guard, Rushford American Legion Riders, Civil War re-enactors and more.

The event is open to the public and will be held rain or shine. Visit www.mncivilwar150.com for directions.
