After years of dreaming of opening their own restaurant, sisters Kelly Hansen and Cheyanne Baker have become the new owners of The Gateway in Wykoff, Minn. The business had been owned for 22 years by Darla Heusinkveld and the sisters finally came to the conclusion that now was the right time for them to take the leap into ownership.

The opening day for the new owners was on June 9, 2014 and the first major change decided upon was to trim the name. Formerly “The Gateway Inn” Cheyanne and Kelly have changed the name to simply “The Gateway” and have made some other changes as well.

For the first time in 20 years, The Gateway is offering Hoagie sandwiches which have been popular among customers. The sandwiches are great for a meal on the go and will be an easy takeout meal for campers and fishermen alike to stop in and pick up on their way through town.

Regular customers will be happy to know that Hansen and Baker are keeping many menu favorites including their Friday night fish fry which includes all you can eat fish, ribs, shrimp, drummies, salad bar, and choice of potato for a very reasonable price of $10.75. The hours of the fish fry on Friday evenings are 4 - 7:15 p.m.

The second Thursday evening of each month features “Taco Thursday” which has brought many patrons in to enjoy a night out during the week. There are also daily specials which normally include roast beef and ham along with another selection which varies.

These selections range from PS&K which is polish sausage and sauerkraut to meatloaf, goulash, baked chicken, tator tot hotdish, pork roast, and other specials.

On Sundays The Gateway offers a special meal with your choice of meat, mashed potatoes, vegetable, salad bar, coffee, and desert which will surely hit the spot especially for those who get out of cooking a big meal at home.

Of course regular items such as hamburgers and French fries are always available to order off the regular menu along with many other great tasting foods. With the extensive menu at The Gateway finding what you are hungry for should be easy.

The Gateway has several delicious choices for breakfast each morning including all of your favorites such as pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Stop in early in the morning and get your day started with a tasty breakfast along with a cup of hot coffee or stop in a little later in the morning if you wish as breakfast is served until 11 a.m.

Baker and Hansen are proud to serve good old-fashioned home cooking peeling potatoes every day for the real mashed potatoes that accompany the meat and vegetable choices. You never know what new choices will be on the menu as the owners explore different options to please customers palates.

The decor of the restaurant will be spruced up in the near future with the new owners adding their own special touch to the business. Those who have eaten at the restaurant before will be happy to know that the salad bar has not changed as the new owners received Heusinkveld’s recipes.

While enjoying a cup of afternoon coffee and good conversation, patrons Barb and Wendell Stender and Allen Schmidt stated they take pleasure in coming in to The Gateway and enjoy the food. Barb stated that the owners and employees are very cordial, which makes time spent at The Gateway comfortable and relaxing.

Baker says she is thankful for the local customers who are very loyal patrons. Hanson said business had been good since the two took over ownership saying many customers have been calling friends and the word has gotten around bringing in a good crowd.

Hansen and Baker are happy to provide employment opportunities to local people having eight part-time employees at this time and consider their business a community restaurant.
