'Fight the Bite' Repellent Awareness Event spotlights simple steps to help prevent diseases from tick, mosquito bites

What: As Memorial Day approaches and more Minnesotans head outdoors, this event will highlight the importance of simple steps to help prevent tick and mosquito diseases.
Information on risks, how to recognize symptoms, how people can protect themselves.
Photo/video opportunities with participants including demonstration of proper repellent use.
An update on metro-area mosquito control efforts.
Field demonstrations of tick habitat and mosquito monitoring and control techniques.
Who: Minnesota Department of Health, Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, DEET Education Program
Where: Bunker Hills Regional Park Activity Center, 550 Bunker Lake Blvd. NW., Andover, MN 55304
When: Thursday, May 20, 10:30 a.m. to Noon
Minnesotans who spend time outdoors from late spring through early fall face substantial health risks from diseases carried by ticks and mosquitoes. Over 1,000 cases of Lyme disease, West Nile virus disease, and other diseases transmitted by ticks or mosquitoes are reported in the state each year. This event will include practical steps residents can take to protect themselves plus hands-on instruction about proper insect repellent selection and application. Speakers will include:
David Neitzel, tick and mosquito disease specialist, Minnesota Department of Health
Jim Stark, Executive Director, Metropolitan Mosquito Control District
Ken Speake, former television reporter and West Nile Virus survivor
Susan Little, Executive Director, DEET Education Program, Washington, D.C.
A portion of 1,500 donated containers of insect repellent products will be given out at the event and officials will announce plans for distribution of the remaining samples.
