"Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you...." Joshua 1:7a NIV
The technology, strategy and the terrain in which wars are fought has changed. Drones, guided missiles, precision guided artillery and other developments are used to lessen the loss of military personnel. Armored transports and personal armor is being refined to protect life. Still the military death toll is high. Some of the best young people enter the military with the realization that their lives are being offered in service to our country. How very appropriate it is for our nation to remember the sacrifice of veterans with a national Memorial Day. It is a day to remember.
The Bible passage above is a portion of Godly advice given to an Old Testament military commander, Joshua. The battles Joshua would face would consume the remainder of his life. For decades he would lead troops into battle. Many lives would be lost in the process. God reminds Joshua of the principles on which Joshua was to base his life. Joshua was to live and protect the religious belief of his people. Joshua was to fight to keep the Ten Commandments the guiding force for his life as well as for others.
Those Ten Commandments still serve as a basis for our rule of law. Our soldiers still need to be strong and very courageous so that rule of law might not be destroyed. Take time during the national holiday to pay your respects to the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Take time to learn why God's advice is still important today. Learn of Jesus, the warrior God sent to fight the ultimate battle. See you in church!
