ST. PAUL, Minn. – Another great farmers market season is underway in Minnesota. Even with the late start to spring, most markets in the southern to metro regions are now open for business, while those in northern Minnesota will be opening throughout the month of June.

With the help of high tunnels, hoop houses and traditional greenhouses, growers are able get their seeds started earlier which means plants and produce are available now at many local markets. For example, right now consumers will find early season vegetables such as spinach, lettuce/greens, radishes and green onions along with rhubarb and asparagus, which are soon entering their peak seasons. In addition, flowers, bedding plants, honey, baked goods and even meat, cheeses and eggs can also be found. Shoppers can expect to see cabbage, green beans and kohlrabi on vendor tables over the next few weeks.

“Farmers markets are a great way to get the whole family involved in eating locally grown, fresh, healthy foods” said Jessica Miles, Ag Marketing Specialist for the Minnesota Grown Program. “Explore the market with your kids and talk to the vendors to learn how they grow your food and get tips for how to cook it. I’d suggest trying one new thing each time you visit a market this summer.”

It’s easy to find a market near you by searching the Minnesota Grown Directory. The 2014 edition is now available and boasts a record 171 farmers markets and 978 farms. To order free, printed copies call Explore Minnesota Tourism at 1-888-TOURISM or request a copy online at The online directory also makes it easy to find markets and farms by entering product, city, or zip code information, or by using the interactive map.
